You can't use Rishi's restaurant vouchers to buy half-price beer

Rishi Sunak has announced that everyone in the country will be able to get a meal at up to £50 off in August.

But while the money will be usable in 130,000 cafes, restaurants and pubs across the country - you can't use it to buy beer.

The vouchers will allow anyone to get up to £10 a head off a meal between Mondays and Wednesdays in August.

The discount can be used unlimited times on any eat-in meal, including on non-alcoholic drinks, for the entire month of August 2020 across the UK.

Participating establishments will be fully reimbursed for the 50% discount and will be able to apply for the cash via a soon-to-launch online portal.

The eat out to help out scheme will be followed by a temporary VAT cut to 5% encourage consumers to make the most of the hospitality sector this summer.

The rate of VAT applied on most tourism and hospitality-related activities will be cut from 20% to 5%.

But while that will apply to many aspects of the great British night out, including hot takeaway food - it will also not apply to alcoholic beverages.

But the Treasury said it would save households an average of around £160 a year.

"This will give these businesses the confidence to maintain their staff, as more people get through the door and business activity kick-starts again," the Treasury added.

"Running through August, the voucher will also give households a 50% reduction on the meals, up to £10 per head, on sit down meals and non-alcoholic drinks. The vouchers will be able to be used on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays."
