'You can’t give performances like that' - Leeds United star issues strong verdict after defeat

Liam Cooper expressed his frustration after Leeds United's 1-0 defeat at Southampton and admitted that their first-half performance wasn't good enough.

Armando Broja's second-half strike proved to be the difference as the Whites suffered their first defeat on the road since the opening day of the season.

With Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha left out of the squad, Leeds struggled to match Ralph Hasenhuttl's side, who deservedly ran out winners on the South Coast.

The Whites failed to have a shot on target and didn't look like scoring all afternoon, although Daniel James did create the best chance but dragged a shot wide.

Saints could've added a second through Broja late on, but he was unable to keep his effort on target after good work from Nathan Redmond.

The defeat leaves Leeds with just six points from their opening eight matches and Cooper delivered his verdict on the game, slamming his side's display in the first 45 minutes.

"We conceded the first half, that’s as abrupt as it is," Cooper told LUTV.

"We weren’t at it in the first half, we didn’t win first balls, we didn’t win second balls and when you come to away grounds like this, you are going to struggle.

"We started the second half well and then conceded on the counter-attack.

"When you go behind in this league, it’s always hard to come back into the game, we stuck at it and that is the only positive we can take really.

"You can’t give first half performances like that and we have to learn from it.

"We’ve got to put it right and if there is any team in the league that is going to analyse it and put it right, it is us.

"We will train hard next week to try and get the result."

Leeds will be hoping to bounce back when they welcome Wolves to Elland Road next Saturday.

Bruno Lage's men come into the game off the back of a terrific 3-2 comeback win over Aston Villa and have won their last three top-flight games.
