You can stay at the Northumberland castle which hosted one of Hollywood's most famous affairs

This Northumberland castle was rumoured to be the setting for one of Hollywood's most famous tormented love affairs.

Stars of Tinseltown's golden age Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy's relationship was an open secret - but when they were looking for a secluded place to stay together, it seems they settled on Barmoor Castle, near Berwick, Northumberland.

Now home to a luxury lodge and a caravan park, owners have revealed the rumours that Hepburn and Tracy were spotted there in the 1960s at a dinner party at the castle, which was hosted by previous owner Bill Sitwell and his American actress wife Joan Castle.

Present-day owner Jamie Lamb said: “When we first launched the park we had an open day and a local fish merchant called out of interest.

“He revealed that he had been asked to come and serve a special fish menu at a dinner party for Bill, Joan and their VIP guests.

“He said that when he walked into the dining room he was amazed to see seated at the table guests of honour Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy."

The lovers’ romance was thought to have begun while on the set of 1942’s Woman of the Year and the pair went on to star in a further eight films together.

The subject of the affair was eventually addressed in Hepburn's biography, when she admitted she loved him - but the actor refused to divorce his wife for her, despite the many rumours that surrounded the two of them.

It seems the pair enjoyed the tranquility of the Northumberland beauty spot, which is now open for tourists to enjoy, with a range of holiday homes now on sale for those who would like to follow in the stars' footsteps.
