You can rent a beautiful private lighthouse island from just £14 each a night

Holidaymakers can spend the night on a remote lighthouse island surrounded by the ocean for just £14 a night.

The Porer lighthouse was built in 1833 on a tiny rock, just a few miles from Istria in Croatia in the sparkling blue Adriatic Sea.

The lighthouse dominates the island, towering over the islet and its small collection of huts at 35 metres tall.

Inside the stone lighthouse - which replaced a previous wooden structure that burned down - four keepers used to live, polishing the glass of the light and ensuring it kept rotating.

When dense fogs descended on the sea, they would blast out an acoustic siren to ward nearby ships from the rocks.

Today inside the tower are two apartments, each of which has a double bed alongside a bathroom and fully equipped kitchen.

The Porer Lighthouse can now be rented out by holidaymakers looking for a place to stay in the European country that is slightly off the beaten track.

Once you've taken a 35-minute boat ride skippered by Siniša Milutinović from Premantura which costs £42 a person, you'll dock at the island and be welcomed by the lighthouse keeper.

There is no where to buy food - cooked or otherwise - on the island, so you'll need to make sure you've got plenty of supplies before making the trip.

In terms of activities, Porer offers a little oasis of calm outside of the pace of every day life.

There is no wifi and limited signal on the rock, meaning you're best to turn your phone off and dig into a book or reconnect with one of your island-mates.

The currents around the island are "very strong" and not even "excellent" swimmers are advised to go more than 50m off shore.

The lighthouse keeper is happy to tell guests where they are best taking a dip.

Sunrise and sunset are said to be particularly spectacular on the island, where marine life can occasionally be spotted splashing about in the shallows.

At the end of your stay you can visit the nature reserve Cape of Kamenjak, which has 530 specious of flora, including 20 types of orchid.

One of the biggest draws of the lighthouse is that it can be rented for the equivalent of £58 a night in the off season.

As it sleeps four people, that means it costs just £14.50 a night each.

"On this dreamy island, you will witness the must scenic sunrises and sunsets, quiet nights, and amazing starry skies," the website for the light reads.

"The lighthouse is the ideal place to rediscover yourself, to remind yourself to a true silence and to be in symbiosis with nature.

"Immerse yourself in the sound of peace and enjoy some of the most beautiful sunsets of your life."
