You can now visit this donkey sanctuary just over an hour from Edinburgh at the weekend

If you are looking from an animal-themed day out this summer then you might want take a short drive to the Scottish Borders over the weekend.

Just over an hour from Edinburgh, near Melrose, lies The Scottish Borders Donkey Sanctuary and the good news is that they have reopened just in time for spring.

Founded in 2003, the sanctuary takes in donkeys and mules who have been rescued from cruelty or neglect or because their owners could no longer care for them.

The sanctuary is a haven for rescued donkeys (The Scottish Borders Donkey Sanctuary)

The 80 acre estate is home to donkeys, ponies, llamas, goats, pigs, sheep, ducks and a mule called Muffin. We are sold.

It is the perfect place to pack up a picnic and get on the road for a day of affordable fun with all the family.

The sanctuary is open from 2pm until 4:30pm every Saturday and Sunday.

If you are looking for somewhere a bit closer to home, Edinburgh is not short of animal days out.

From alpaca trekking in the Pentland Hills to cuddling baby lambs Gorgie Farm, there is plenty on your door step.
