You can now visit Edinburgh Castle from anywhere in the world thanks to new 3D model

Fancy visiting one of Scotland's most famous landmarks today? Well now you can thanks to new 3D modelling system that lets you see Edinburgh Castle in all its glory from the comfort of your home.

Historic Environment Scotland (HES), investigate, care for and promote Scotland’s historic environment, is offering a great way to appreciate the scale and magnificence of the iconic fortress through a  new digital model created to entertain history fans during lockdown.

Led by HES’s Digital Innovation and Digital Documentation Teams based at the Engine Shed in Stirling, the 3D model is populated with information giving the virtual visitor an immersive digital tour of the Castle.

The design team say they have also added in a chance for virtual visitors to explore previously hidden parts of the castle.

The model was created using laser scan data captured as part of the Rae project which aims to accurately digitally document over 300 heritage sites and collections in HES’ care.

Speaking about the new model, an HES spokesperson said: "These digital innovations are crucial in helping to understand, conserve and tell the stories of our historic sites."

The model follows a similar one made for the unique Caerlaverock Castle, which sits proudly in Dumfries and was the chief seat of the Maxwells, one of the great noble families in southern Scotland.
