You can now turn yourself into a Mari Lwyd on Snapchat and here's how

The centuries-old tradition of the Mari Lwyd has made it into the digital age with a new filter on Snapchat.

For those who don't know, a Mari Lloyd is part of a Welsh folk custom in which a model hobbyhorse - made from a horse's skull mounted on a pole - is carried by someone under a cloth.

It can be a bit creepy-looking, but it's definitely one our cooler customs.

Traditionally, the Mari Lwyd was taken from house to house to usher in the New Year.

In the more modern version, the Mari Lwyd group would spar in rhyme with those inside the house, making up mocking verses about each other in turn.

If the Mari Lwyd group won, they would have to be invited in and provided with a (usually alcoholic) drink.

But now, thanks Phil Walton who uploaded it to the social media app, you can turn yourself into the historic horse skull, complete with voice changer, and get involved with the celebrations.

There's also a voice changer (WalesOnline)

Here's how you can get the filter on Snapchat:

Step 1

Open Snapchat and turn the camera to selfie mode.

Step 2

Pinch the screen and pull down the maps (your location needs to be turned on for this).

Step 3

Click on the search icon and type "Mari Lwyd" into the searchbar that appears.

Step 4

Click "try lens".

Step 5

Make a video or take a picture of yourself as the Mari Lwyd
