Translating a message on WhatsApp has always been a tough task, as you had to juggle between Google Translate or any other app to translate a specific message. However, now Meta seems to be addressing this issue as the company has added message translations directly inside the app for both Android and iPhone users.
It’s pretty straightforward to use. You just have to long-press any message that you want to translate and tap on the Translate button. After that, you can pick the preferred language, and the message will get translated. Meta also allows you to download a language and save it for future use cases. The best part about this translation feature is that it works across 1:1 chats, group conversations, or even channel updates.
Interestingly, Android users will get an extra option to enable automatic translation for an entire thread. So, when this feature is turned on, every incoming message in that chat will be translated without needing to do anything.
When it comes to the privacy part, Meta has stated that all the translations will happen locally on your device, and WhatsApp itself doesn’t see the messages you translate.
The company has already started the rollout with a limited set of languages at the moment. Android users will get support for six languages, which include English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. On the other hand, iPhone users will get translations in more than 19 languages, with more to be added over time.
Meta says that the goal with this feature is to remove language barriers and help people connect more deeply, no matter where they are in the world.
