You can now stay in a real igloo under the Northern Lights in Lapland

As soon as someone mentions Lapland we tend to think of reinders ambling around in picturesque snowscapes without a care in the world or excited kids eager to visit Santa in his grotto.

But now there’s another reason to visit the Arctic Circle.

A new type of adventure holiday is available for Christmas 2019 - but the accommodation has still to be built.

Those looking for a winter escape can now book an Airbnb in a real igloo in freezing Lapland and there’s even the chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

The average temperature in Pelkosenniemi is less than zero degrees Celsius, according to climate-data.org - and freezing winters mean it’s the perfect place to snuggle up in a real igloo.

The listing says that six-person igloos are built by hand during the winter months and temperatures inside the temporary accommodation are always below freezing.

It comes as no surprise that guests are advised to bring warm clothing, hats and a headlight. It’s also worth noting the nearest supermarkets are at a nearby ski resort 10 kilometres away.

However, if it gets too cold, a warm apartment is also available 24 hours a day.

The igloos come with LED lights and real beds and the biggest draw of all - a chance to see the Northern Lights.

The Aurora Borealis is visible on roughly 200 nights a year – or every other clear night – in Lapland.

The dazzling display occurs when electrically-charged particles from the sun cross into the earth’s atmosphere where they collide with oxygen and nitrogen molecules, emitting light.

The igloos are part of the Lucky Ranch horse farm near the Pyhä-Luosto National Park in Finland and the accommodation has a five-star rating from adventurous travellers on the booking website .

Prices are around £100 per night per person and the igloos are available to book over Christmas.
