You can now pick up free Covid lateral flow tests from Swansea libraries

Free lateral flow tests are now being made available from libraries across Swansea.

The LFTs, which are for people not displaying any Covid symptoms, are already being used twice a week by both pupils and teachers in schools across Wales.

The rapid self-tests are also available for people who cannot work at home, those travelling, or others who simply want the peace of mind.

The tests involve people swabbing their nose and throat before dipping the swab in a liquid, popping two drops of that liquid in a small white device, and hoping a single line appears in the right place to indicate a negative result. The LFT kits can be ordered online but Swansea Council is increasing access to the kits so people can check themselves regularly.

They are now available at libraries in Clydach, Brynhyfryd, Gorseinon, Killay, Morriston and Pontarddulais.

Swansea Council leader Rob Stewart said: "The council has been side-by-side with the public throughout the pandemic and will continue to be with them as we emerge from it. LFT kits are a useful part of the effort to tackle the virus, alongside the hugely-successful NHS vaccination programme which has seen more than 360,000 first and second jabs given to people in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot so far."

More than 2.6m lateral flow tests have been used in Wales so far this year at a cost understood to be around £8 a time, although the UK Government refuses to reveal exactly how much has been spent to date.

Around one-in-three people who have the virus show no symptoms but can still unwittingly spread it to people they come into contact with. Regular LFT tests are now part of the effort to try to keep the virus at bay, including the Delta variant that has been found in Swansea Bay. The test kits come with full instructions.

However, anyone showing symptoms of the virus should not visit a library. Instead, visit the Welsh Government website for more information here.
