You can now pay to swim with Newfoundlands at Portishead Marina

Ever wondered what it would be like to be rescued at sea by a dog? No? Well neither have we but it sounds fun.

Bristol Animal Rescue Centre is holding its Newfoundland Water Rescue event at Portishead Marina this September - and you can take part.

Experience the animals live in action, as you float in the open water and wait to be rescued by a trained 70kg hero.

The sea rescue dogs at Newfound Friends animal charity will show off their incredible life-saving skills to get you back to safety on dry land.

“Everything about the Newfoundland is designed for water rescue,” Newfound Friends told TeamDogs .

“From their muscular build to their fully webbed paws and thick double coat, these gentle giants are master water rescuers and can even pull 50 times their own weight in water.”

To take part in the event, you must be aged eight or over, and a confident swimmer in open water. The maximum weight limit is 15 stone.

A statement on the Bristol Animal Rescue Centre website reads: “You will be suited up, taken out into the water by boat and then asked to jump in.

“But don’t worry, it won’t be long before the Newfoundland dogs show off their amazing water-rescue skills and tow you safely back to dry land.”

On Saturday, September 4 Bristol Animal Rescue Centre will hold its Newfoundland Water Rescue event with Newfound Friends at Portishead Marina, Bristol.

Registration fees cost £25. Sign up for one serious splash by emailing fundraising@bristolarc.org.uk or call 0117 980 3906.
