OpenAI is tapping into the e-commerce space as the company has launched instant checkout, a feature that allows you to buy products directly inside the chatbot. As of now, the company has integrations from Etsy and Shopify, which are powered by the Agentic commerce protocol built in collaboration with Stripe. The best part is that OpenAI is open-sourcing it for developers and merchants.
We’re introducing the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard co-developed with @Stripe that enables programmatic commerce flows between users, AI agents, and businesses. https://t.co/RGA8gnvSFG

The feature is currently going live for users in the US and will be available across free and pro plans, covering purchases from Etsy sellers. Support for Shopify will follow soon. Along with that, merchants interested in participating can apply via http://chatgpt.com/merchants.
This is a big step as ChatGPT is already helping users make purchase decisions. But now you will be able to complete purchases without leaving the app. OpenAI says that the move builds on ChatGPT’s growing role as a shopping assistant.
Furthermore, this expansion is a major moment for Stripe too, which is powering the checkout infrastructure behind the Agentic Commerce Protocol. By open-sourcing it, OpenAI is encouraging wider adoption and enabling developers to integrate conversational checkout experiences into other platforms.
ChatGPT currently has an estimated 800 million weekly users, a number that’s double Amazon’s. Of course, not every user opens the app to shop, and how comfortable people feel about making purchases inside ChatGPT is still uncertain. But the sheer scale of usage means even a small percentage of conversions could have a massive impact on online retail.
