You can now buy a bed for the homeless at this Edinburgh shelter for Christmas

A charity are appealing to people in Edinburgh to help out those most in need this Christmas by giving them a place to sleep.

National homelessness charity, Bethany Christian Trust, is encouraging shoppers to buy a bed for people who are homeless during the festive season.

By purchasing a voucher from the charity, you will give a person sleeping rough access to their overnight care shelter, from 9:30pm until 7am the next morning.

They will also receive a freshly prepared two-course hot meal, breakfast and professional support, as well as much-needed respite from the cold.

The gift vouchers cost £21 each and are now available to purchase online here until 17 January 2020.

Bethany’s Care Shelter started in Edinburgh as a 2-week pilot over Christmas but has now grown to span 32 weeks and is a crucial lifeline for hundreds of homeless people during winter.

The service is run by a small team of staff that relies on donations and 1,000 volunteers from churches across Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Alasdair Bennett, Chief Executive at Bethany Christian Trust said: “In the season of giving, think about giving a gift that will truly make a difference.

"Giving someone the opportunity to escape the cold and receive a hot meal can make all the difference.

"Your donation would provide our team with the means to help those most in need find a warm and loving place to spend Christmas this year.

"When thinking of how you can make a difference this year, please think of Bethany."
