You can meet actors portraying 1940s war volunteers as part of Edinburgh Open Streets event

You can meet actors portraying 1940s Edinburgh war volunteers as part of this weekend's Open Streets event.

The Museum of Edinburgh will be welcoming visitors from 10am to meet the Edinburgh Home Guard, or then LDV (Local Defence Volunteers), as they would have looked at the outbreak of World War Two.

Costumed actors will be stationed there throughout the day, showing off various improvised weapons of the time, and tactics used in preparation for a German invasion. The drill and weapon demonstrations will be at 12pm and 2pm.

Across the UK the LDV had around 1.5 million volunteers acting as an "armed citizen militia" supporting the British Army during World War Two. They were essentially supposed to be a second defence force in the event of an enemy invasion.

The event at the Museum of Edinburgh on Sunday will be free to attend.

The Edinburgh Open Streets event will return this weekend, on 3 November. A full programme is expected to be announced this week.

Previously there have been guided walks, outdoor tai chi classes, yoga and swing dancing on the streets of the city centre, as a number of roads closed down to traffic.

We'll bring you more on Edinburgh's upcoming Open Streets event throughout the week.
