You can drink tea in Robert Louis Stevenson's Edinburgh home

Edinburgh has a rich literary past, and those interested in exploring this side of the city's history have a fascinating opportunity to learn more about one of Scotland's great writers.

Robert Louis Stevenson's childhood home was on Heriot Row. He stayed there from age six until he left in 1880, aged 30.

He was cared for through many illnesses by his mother and his beloved nurse Alison Cunningham, known as "Cummie."

His literary mind was nourished by her tales of ghosts and Scottish history in the grand New Town property.

It's now home to the Macfie family (Kim Traynor)

Now, The Stevenson House is home to the Macfie family, who are happy to tell guests about its past.

An Airbnb "experience" offers guests a two-hour history tour of the building with tea and cakes at the end.

They say: "You'll get the unique chance to see behind the facade of a historic building in Edinburgh's New Town, which is also a living family home and the place where Scotland's most-read author grew up.

"Hear what it was like for him as he struggled to become a writer, exploring Edinburgh's heights and depths, and learn about the fife of today for the family that lives here.

The National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh just tweeted a picture that will haunt your nightmares

"At the end, you'll be treated to home-baked cakes and tea or coffee in the formal dining room, and you'll learn more about life in Stevenson's day and now."
