'You can call it hatred' Leeds United skipper Liam Cooper speaks out about Manchester United rivalry

Leeds United will do battle with their bitter rivals Manchester United for the first time in eight years on Wednesday.

While current Whites skipper Liam Cooper may not have faced the Old Trafford side in a Leeds shirt before, but he's fully up to speed on the history between the two clubs.

After travelling to Australia for a pre-season tour which sees Leeds take on Manchester United and Western Sydney Wanderers, Cooper spoke to the local press about his take on the rivalry.

He said: "Being a boy growing up in England, you always knew of the Man United and Leeds United - you can call it hatred back home.

"The games were always good games.

"For sure (it still exists). You feel it as a footballer, and you feel it as a fan. It will be exciting. I think it adds a bit more spice to the game."

Asked if he was expecting any feistiness in Wednesday's game, he said: "There could be. We'll see."

He admitted he hopes the grudge match will be contested more regularly after Leeds United narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League in the play-off semi finals at the end of the 2018/19 season.

He said: "We want to play this game (against Manchester United) in the Premier League. We don't want it to be a pre-season friendly. That's the desire of the group."

The last time Leeds United played Manchester United they were on the end of a 0-3 defeat in the third round of the EFL Cup in 2011 with goals from Ryan Giggs and Michael Owen. The previous year saw Leeds beat Manchester United at Old Trafford by a Jermaine Beckford goal.

Leeds United play Manchester United at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Wednesday with a 12 noon UK-time kick-off before heading out west to face Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday.
