You can bet on cars called Betty

ONE in 10 drivers like to name their car – with Betty the most common moniker because drivers felt it reflected the vehicle’s dependable personality.

In fact, a huge 66 per cent of people who called their motor Betty said it reflected the machine’s reliable personality.

Other popular names included Bob, Bert, Dave and Amy, the survey by comparison website Quotezone.co.uk found. Rounding out the top 10 choices were Bertie, Alfie, Peggy, Katy and Tilly.

The study also found that 50 per cent of cars were perceived as female, 30 per cent male and 20 per cent had no gender identification. Interestingly, 66 per cent of the motorists that did name their vehicle confessed to feeling more attached to their car after naming it.

Owners are most inspired to name their car by its colour or appearance (28 per cent) and personality (20 per cent). The most common kind of personality traits drivers described their motor as having were reliable (39 per cent), playful (20 per cent) and sexy (15 per cent).

Certain brands were also deemed to have defined characteristics, with Honda seen as adventurous and sexy, Fiat as confident and playful, and Nissan as cute.

And some owners chose more unusual names, usually influenced by films and TV shows, including Gandalf, Trashpanda, Gremlin, Mrs Potter and Porg.
