‘You asked me on the date!’: Austin man goes on coffee date with woman. Then he orders first—and refuses to pay

If chivalry isn’t dead, it’s definitely on life support. A TikToker from Austin, Texas, is going viral after sharing her awkward coffee date with a man who not only asked her out, but also ordered first, paid only for himself, and left her holding a $5 reminder that modern dating might just be doomed.

What’s the Dating Etiquette?

It seems some men simply don’t know the answer to this question, and unfortunately, Lynn Marie’s (@lynnmarie19) TikTok proves exactly that. Lynn begins her clip–that now has over 15,000views–by saying, “I went on a coffee date today and I don’t know how I feel about it.”

She explains that this man had asked her out on a date. Now, this can mean everything to some people and nothing to many, but since it’s such a controversial topic, CBS News covered it back in 2024 and found that: “One rule of thumb is that the person who invites someone on a date should pay the tab, including gratuity.”

While her date may not know this, or simply not care, Lynn also mentions how the flame of chivalry might be flickering off due to this man’s lack of manners. “We were in line to get coffee and he went and ordered first, which I feel like ladies go first but whatever…and second he didn’t offer to pay for my coffee, like you can’t even offer to pay for my $5 coffee?”

Should a Man Always Pay for Dates?

The viewers weigh in. The top comment reads, “If he can’t pay for coffee, he is not ready for a relationship. No second date.” On the other hand, it seems some men do notice the behavior. One viewer says, “Those are two very basic things. It’s rough out there, ladies. I’m sorry.”

Another popular topic was the city’s particular dating scene, especially since Lynn’s caption was: “Austin men are a different breed.” For example, one viewer says, “All you had to say was Austin lol,” while another shares,  “Austin quite literally has the worst dating scene in America.”

While it may be rough out there in Texas, The Mary Sue has uncovered a similar dating landscape in L.A where serial dater Noa Bar (@heyimnoabar) shared how her date “punished” her for a common request while eating out.
