Keith Hackett’s verdict

1) Frankly it’s irrelevant who they are directing this foul abuse at – it’s not acceptable. Swearing can be a difficult issue but swearing as part of directed personal abuse is not something you can or should tolerate. Identify the ringleader and send him off – or if there are two players who are equally guilty of the worst abuse, show both of them red cards. Thanks to Gary Hart.
2) There are times as a referee when showing some common sense and a relaxed attitude makes sense in terms of man-management – and this is one of those times. The coin toss was carried out correctly, albeit in a roundabout way, so take no action and start the game, after you’ve asked for your coin back … Thanks to Ian Walsh.
3) You need more information here before you react. Stop play if the ball isn’t already dead and then seek the views of both of your assistants. If they were certain this body charge was a deliberate act then quite clearly you need to show the player a red card for violent conduct. If, though, they cannot be sure, let it go and include it in your report. The authorities may review video evidence. Ralf Perkins wins the shirt.
