Keith Hackett's verdict
1) First things first – whatever the defender was or was not looking at when he launched himself, he has committed a rash tackle – it's at least a yellow card offence, possibly a red if you rule it was serious foul play. As for the advert – all you can do is advise the player you will include his comments in your post-game report for the authorities to assess. But really, there's no excuse for endangering an opponent. Thanks to Larry Higgs.
2) First, tell your fourth official that you don't appreciate him keeping this sort of information to himself for five minutes – he should have told you straight away. Second, advise the home manager that you intend to report what happened to the authorities so that they can investigate exactly what was administered to the player. That said, there is nothing in the laws to stop players drinking coffee during stoppages, if they really think it'll help. Thanks to Jonathan Guest.
3) This is a serious subject and a growing problem in the game – but you don't have the authority to refuse permission for the player to continue. You must, though, advise him and his manager that you will be reporting him after the game. The manager would be sensible to substitute him at that point. Jack Clark wins the shirt.
