Australian band You Am I and a "record" fireworks display will headline Newcastle's New Year's Eve celebrations.

City of Newcastle announced on Tuesday that the event would have a butterfly theme, including a seven-metre "butterfly dome and illuminated fibre-optic trees", and a children's zone.

Jets Play Jets, featuring Screaming Jets guitarists Grant Walmsley and Richard Lara, will support You Am I, along with reggae band Rum Jungle and British electronic act Antony & Cleopatra.

The festivities will end with a 15-minute fireworks display at 9pm.

The council said it could not save money by cancelling the fireworks display because it had signed contracts for the display several months ago but would raise money on the night for the Red Cross to help those affected by bushfires.

The council entered into a $300,000 contract with Mothership Events in September to plan and deliver the city's New Year's Eve and Australia Day celebrations.

New Year's Eve program

5-5.40pm: Rum Jungle

6-6.40pm: Antony & Cleopatra

7-7.40pm: Jets Play Jets

8-9pm: You Am I

9pm: Fireworks
