I do not feel that your Lancastrian readers have much grounds for complaining that a small part of Lancashire now falls within the enlarged Yorkshire Dales National Park (Lancashire will never surrender its territory, Letters, 6 August).
In 1974, when the English counties were reorganised, quite a significant portion of the West Riding, in the Forest of Bowland area and between Clitheroe and Skipton, was transferred from Yorkshire to Lancashire, including towns and villages such as Earby, Barnoldswick, Gisburn and Slaidburn. So I don’t see why Yorkshire shouldn’t get a little bit of Lancashire back, particularly as the area in question remains administratively in Lancashire.
