Aaron Finch will return to Australia and miss the rest of Yorkshire’s season after scans revealed the batsman has fractured his fifth metatarsal in his right foot.
Finch, Australia’s Twenty20 captain, has been plagued by injury this campaign, having spent two months on the sidelines with a torn hamstring picked up while playing in the IPL before suffering a bruised lung last month when on duty for Yorkshire’s second XI.
Finch, 28, suffered his latest injury during Yorkshire’s NatWest T20 Blast win over Durham last Friday and he is due to return to Australia on Tuesday to see a specialist in Melbourne.
“That’s the end of the season for Aaron, as far as Yorkshire is concerned,” said Yorkshire’s director of cricket, Martyn Moxon. “Scans have revealed that he has fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot. He will now see a specialist in Melbourne. It is a great disappointment for Aaron and the club and we wish him a speedy recovery.”
Yorkshire are now looking to extend Glenn Maxwell’s stay as cover for Finch. Maxwell plays his last scheduled match for Yorkshire on Tuesday before a two-week tour of India with Australia A. It is hoped that he will return at the end of the month to figure in the County Championship and the Royal London One-Day Cup.
“The plan is for Glenn to return after the India A tour at the back end of July to play in the Royal London One-Day Cup competition and a couple of Championship matches,” added Moxon. “We are finalising arrangements with Cricket Australia, but expect that to be sorted out soon.”
Meanwhile, New Zealand’s Kane Williamson will join Yorkshire for the final four games of the Championship campaign at the end of August.
