Yorkshire market town stranded by severe floods as river bursts banks

Roads have been closed in and around Otley after the River Wharfe burst its banks, causing severe flooding.

Three flood warnings demanding that people take 'immediate action' have been issued, while six 'be alert' flood alerts are in place. There are also 19 flood warnings for North Yorkshire.

Water levels have risen significantly after heavy rain throughout the weekend and residents who live near the River Wharfe have been urged to activate any flood protection measures that they have, with a number of locals protecting their garages and front doors with sandbags.

There are currently six flood alerts in place for the Lower River Calder catchment, Lower River Nidd, Lower River Wharfe, Middle River Aire catchment, Upper River Calder catchment and Upper River Nidd, whilst two other flood warnings in place.

One Otley resident said: "It looks like it is still rising too, it is very worrying. I cannot believe that this is happening again.

"As if 2020 could not get any worse!"

West Yorkshire Police have urged drivers never to be aware of flooding on the roads, particularly on the A65 near Ben Rhydding and Burley in Wharfedale.

A spokesperson for the force said: "First few jobs coming in this morning have been reports of flooding on the A65 in Ben Rhydding/Burley in Wharfedale. Traffic is building up, spread the word.

"Please don’t drive through flood water. There are signs out saying Road Closed."

Otley and Yeadon councillor Sandy Lay has warned: "Flooding is possible in Otley and Pool today due to persistent, heavy rain on Sunday.

"Please start to prepare if you are in an affected area."

Meanwhile, a flood warning from government said: "Please activate any property flood protection products you may have, such as flood barriers and air brick covers, and stay away from fast moving water.

"Our incident response staff are closely monitoring the forecast. This message will be updated as the situation changes."
