Yorkshire firm Heald's anti-terror barriers protect busy US street

Anti-terror barriers protecting a major tourist destination in Memphis, USA were supplied by an East Yorkshire company.

Heald, based in Hornsea, installed four of its Matador barriers to secure Beale Street in the state of Tennessee.

Its barriers are capable of halting a 7.5 tonne truck travelling at 40mph, and are designed to protect tourists and visitors from vehicle attacks.

Debbie Heald MBE and Rod Heald, directors at Heald, visited Beale Street, Memphis to see the Matador barriers in place.

They said: “Our presence in the USA continues to grow from strength to strength as a result of strong partnerships with our distribution network.

“They continue to excel in promoting the benefits of our range of patent protected products, which includes the Matador, the only bollard available in the world which operates by sliding open to permit access.

“We look forward to increasing our footprint within the region and continuing to develop excellent partnerships with our distribution network.”

Beale Street is known as being ‘the official home of the Blues,’ and hosts a string of large outdoor music concerts.

This year’s Beale Street Music Festival saw the likes of Cardi B and The Killers take to the stage to entertain large crowds.

Heald’s new Matador barriers will help protect visitors to the city of Memphis.

The Matador barriers consist of a sliding bollard system. Moving bollards allow for access to large vehicles and traffic when needed, but can be placed to prevent access.

The project in Memphis follows a string of other impressive projects completed by East Yorkshire-based Heald.

The firm’s barriers are also used to protect busy shopping centre Clarke Quay in Singapore, as well as The Crucible venue in Sheffield.

Other projects involving the Matador in the USA include Winchester Old Town Mall in Virginia and the French Quarter in New Orleans.

Heald has now been established more than three decades, and is one of the world’s most established manufacturers of anti-terror barriers.
