Yorkshire coronavirus cases surge with big increase in one area

Dozens more cases of coronavirus have been confirmed across Yorkshire today.

Sheffield's cases shot up from 106 to 130 in the last day - the steepest rise in cases across Yorkshire.

Current UK death toll as a result of coronavirus stands at 422, with over 8,000 people having tested positive.

Earlier today it was confirmed four people had died in Leeds in 24 hours after testing positive for coronavirus.

There were 1,427 more UK cases confirmed today. Across the North East and Yorkshire, there are now 446 cases.

This comes as the UK goes into lockdown, with the government announcing additional measures to combat the spread of the virus - including limiting social gatherings to only two people.

Previously, it was announced that pubs, clubs, and all leisure facilities were to close; now, all non-essential shops - such as clothes shops - are to close until further notice.

All the deaths confirmed so far in Yorkshire

The government have laid out a set of new rules which Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock, insists are "not suggestions".

These include not leaving your home, except to shop for essential items or attend medical needs; not gathering in public with more than two people; and only exercising outdoors once a day.
