Yorkshire Bank reveals why customers were left without January wages

Yorkshire Bank has apologised for an embarrassing blunder which has left thousands of customers to face an agonising wait for their January wages.

Yorkshire Bank and Clydesdale Bank, both owned by Virgin Money UK, have been inundated with complaints from cash-strapped customers on January 3, who claim that wages, pensions and disability benefits have not been paid into their accounts.

The important transactions were not completed on time because the wrong processing date had been inserted into the banks' electronic payment system.

A Virgin Money spokesman said: "We are aware some customers experienced a delay today with Bacs transactions reaching their accounts.

"This was caused by the processing date for a Bacs file being incorrect, which delayed transactions showing in customers’ accounts.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused to those customers affected. We are now working to get account balances updated overnight so that correct funds are available from early tomorrow morning.

"We can assure customers that they will not be negatively impacted financially as a result of this. Anybody with any ongoing concerns should contact the bank through the usual channels.”

Yorkshire Bank and Clydesdale Bank have both come under fierce criticism from customers who have been demanding an explanation for hours.

Customer Caron Ryalls said: "Banks having such a massive failure with their customers' money should have to be transparent and provide quality and meaningful information and regular updates.

"The way Yorkshire Bank have handled this is appalling and it has left probably thousands of people in financial limbo or hardship."
