Yorkgate Train Station refurbishment work to begin in the coming weeks

Work on the refurbishment of a Belfast train station is to begin in the coming weeks.

Construction work is due to begin on Yorkgate Train Station in North Belfast, with the station remaining in use throughout, with temporary diversions in place for pedestrians accessing and exiting the station.

Most of the works are set to take place between Monday to Friday from 7am to 7pm, and Saturday from 8am to 1pm.

Translink have promised the public they will minimise disturbance at the station as much as possible during redevelopment work.

Following completion, the new station will be renamed York Street Station to reflect its location in North Belfast.

It's expected that work will be live on the site until Autumn 2024.

The new Yorkgate transport hub enhancements include:

  • A new train station building with high quality customer and staff facilities
  • New public facilities including retail space, toilets, waiting areas and a Changing Places facility
  • Cycle parking and connections to existing cycle infrastructure
  • Potential to connect to new cycle infrastructure
  • A new footbridge between platforms
  • Increased platform width
  • New canopies to platforms
  • High quality landscaping and public realm

When the redevelopment plans were announced, Translink Group Chief Executive, Chris Conway, said: "Passengers will enjoy an enhanced travel experience with modern new facilities and improvements to accessibility with better links to walking and cycling.

"These will be key to creating a sustainable transport network as part of a ‘green’ economic recovery. It will also help revitalise the local economy by supporting both the manufacturing and construction industry as we rebuild and recover.

“As a regeneration project, we look forward to helping transform this part of the city by contributing to other ongoing regeneration initiatives including the good work underway in Sailortown and the emerging City Quays and Ulster University developments."
