Yorke Peninsula car crash claims three lives in South Australia

One of two cars ready to be taken away after the crash.

A two-car collision near Maitland on the Yorke Peninsula has claimed a third life after an 82-year-old man died from his injuries in hospital overnight.

The crash occurred about 4:45pm on Monday on the Spencer Highway near the intersection of Balgowan Road.

Police said a car that was travelling on the main road collided with a car that had crossed a give-way sign on the side road.

Both drivers, a 59-year-old man from nearby Moonta and a 72-year-old man from Sheidow Park, Adelaide, died at the scene.

The third man, who was from Flagstaff Hill in the Adelaide foothills and a passenger of the Sheidow Park man, was airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital but died about 11:00pm.

Inspector Ben Spencer said they were investigating whether driver behaviour such as speed and distraction caused the triple fatality.

"We will be investigating why [the car on the side road] went through the give-way sign," he said.

Police closed the highway for several hours while Major Crash Investigators examined the site.
