The University of York’s York Vision was crowned newspaper of the year at the Guardian Student Media awards 2014.
The 26–year–old title beat its campus rival, Nouse, to win the prestigious award for the sixth time since 2000.
The prize was presented at a ceremony at Guardian headquarters in London on Thursday night, hosted by the broadcaster Rick Edwards.
It was a successful night for the University of York in another category, as student Patrick Greenfield won the reporter of the year prize and James Tyas came runner-up in the critic of the year award, which was won by Cambridge University’s Cal Revely–Calder.
More than 700 hopefuls put themselves forward for the 36th annual Guardian Student Media awards, which were judged earlier this year by leading industry figures, including the Guardian News & Media editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger, Financial Times deputy editor John Thornhill and Cate Sevilla, managing editor of BuzzFeed UK.
Students at Nottingham University won website of the year for ImpactNottingham and Marta Portocarrero, of Goldsmiths, University of London, was named student digital journalist of the year.
Another Goldsmiths student, Julia Schoenstaedt, saw her work commended with the photographer of the year award.
City University’s Ralph Jones took home the feature writer of the year prize, while Lucy Webster, of the University of Warwick, won columnist of the year.
Amelia Dimoldenberg, of Central St Martins, University of the Arts London, was named student broadcast journalist of the year.
All winners were awarded with two weeks of work experience in the Guardian’s newsroom, with runners–up receiving one week. Additional prizes included an iPad Air and entry to a Guardian Masterclass on journalism.
