York's turn

Yorkshire's newest landmark. Photograph:
Alistair Wilson/PAA new attraction rolled into York today to rival the London Eye. The £3.6 million Yorkshire Wheel towers over the city's Railway Museum and at 200ft high, provides a perfect vantage point from which to view the city's attractions including the Minster and city walls. The panorama from the 42 capsules extends to 30 miles in every direction, encompassing an array of Yorkshire landmarks, including the white horse at Kilburn, near Thirsk. "This is great for the city of York," says the Wheel's head of commercial development, Judith Whitaker. "Who wouldn't want to have an icon like this in their city?"

There's the question. Who wouldn't? Should every major city in England be jumping on the big wheel bandwagon, providing a whistlestop tour of its sights from the comfort of a pod? Or are such attractions themselves just a blight on the cityscape?
