Yoon hopeful of turning around Kirins' fortunes

Yoon Jong-Hwan vowed to put SCG Muang Thong United's campaign back on track after being unveiled as coach of the struggling giants yesterday.

"It is an honour for me to work with a great team like Muang Thong United. It is another big challenge of my coaching career," the South Korean told a press conference at SCG Stadium.

"I am here to help the team return to the top of the table. The most important thing is our unity to make a comeback. Our situation is not good but not too bad. I am sure that we can get back to where we belong."

The 46-year-old former midfielder played for South Korea at the 2002 World Cup.

He has coached South Korean club Ulsan Hyundai and Japanese sides Sagan Tosu and Cerezo Osaka.

Yoon steered Cerezo Osaka to the J-League Cup and the Emperor Cup successes in 2017.

He has signed a contract to coach the Kirins until the end of the season with an option to extend it for another year.

Muang Thong are currently 15th in the 16-team Thai League 1.

The Kirins will next host leaders Port on April 20.

Muang Thong director Ronnarit Suewaja said Yoon is the right man for the job.

"We are in a difficult situation but we believe in the quality of the team and the new coach," he said.

"We have followed him for a long time. We wanted a coach of a new generation who has proven achievement."

Ronnarit added: "He is polite and is determined to become successful. We are ready to give him support."

Yoon is the 10th foreign coach hired by Muang Thong with their past managers including Carlos Roberto Carvalho, Robbie Fowler, Slavisa Jokanovic, Winfried Schaefer and Scott Cooper.
