The government decided at a Cabinet meeting on Friday to appoint Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings Chairman of the Board Kojiro Shiraishi as Japan's ambassador to Switzerland.

With the decision, Shiraishi, 72, a former chairman of the Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association, retired on Friday from the posts of Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings chairman; chairman of The Yomiuri Shimbun; director of The Yomiuri Shimbun, Osaka; director of The Yomiuri Shimbun, Seibu; and director of Chuokoron-Shinsha, Inc.

Shiraishi will assume the ambassadorial post officially on Monday.

According to the Foreign Ministry and other entities, past ambassadors from the media include Sumiko Takahara, who was from The Mainich Shimbun, as ambassador to Finland, and Hiroyuki Ishi, who was from The Asahi Shimbun, as ambassador to Zambia. However, an ambassador who has acted as the chairman of the Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association will be the first.
