Yokozuna Kisenosato suffered another setback at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament after losing to No. 1 maegashira Myogiryu at the Fukuoka Kokusai Center on the second day Monday, while komusubi Takakeisho maintained his strong start after a stunning win against an ozeki.
Kisenosato, the sole yokozuna at the tourney, tried to keep Myogiryu (1-1) off the belt, but the No. 1 maegashira eventually worked his arms in to gain the hold he needed to force out the yokozuna, who seemed to lose steam in the extended 35-second bout.
Takakeisho followed up his first-day win over Kisenosato by handing ozeki Goeido his first loss. The two exchanged slaps after the initial charge, but Goeido lost his balance and the komusubi dragged the ozeki down to the dirt.
On the opening day Sunday, Kisenosato was unable to withstand Takakeisho's thrusts and was slapped down in the middle of the ring.
The two other yokozuna, Hakuho -- winner of the previous Autumn basho -- and Kakuryu have skipped the tournament due to injuries. Komusubi Kaisei, who missed the first two days, plans to return to action on Tuesday.
The two other ozeki kept perfect records as Tochinoshin forced out No. 3 maegashira Nishikigi and Takayasu slapped down No. 1 maegashira Hokutofuji.
