Embattled yokozuna Kisenosato suffered a serious blow on the third day of the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament on Tuesday, losing to top maegashira Hokutofuji.
Hokutofuji (1-2) was aggressive from the jump-off in the final bout of the day at the Fukuoka Kokusai Center, overpowering the tournament's lone yokozuna, who remains winless. A cloud hangs over Kisenosato as a top-ranked wrestler.
Ozeki Takayasu, one of the tournament leaders, maintained his composure to keep his record perfect by throwing down komusubi Kaisei, who joined the action after missing the first two days. Komusubi Takakeisho also remained unbeaten after he marched No. 3 maegashira Ryuden (1-2) out of the ring in their first career meeting.
No. 2 maegashira Tochiozan also notched his third win by skillfully throwing Goeido out of the ring, handing the ozeki his second loss.
Sekiwake Mitakeumi, the winner of the July tourney, collected his second win by forcing out winless No. 3 maegashira Nishikigi.
Ozeki Tochinoshin managed to pick up his second win by slapping down No. 1 maegashira Myogiryu (1-2).
