
Yokozuna Kakuryu has pulled out of the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament, which will start at the Fukuoka Kokusai Center on Sunday, following yokozuna Hakuho's withdrawal, it was announced on Thursday.
The injury to Kakuryu's right ankle that he suffered during the Autumn regional tour in October has worsened.
Kisenosato will be the only yokozuna to appear at the tournament, as the other two will be out from opening day.
Kakuryu's stablemaster Izutsu said the yokozuna told him on Thursday afternoon that he was not in a condition to take part in the tournament.
