Yokozuna Kakuryu notified the Japan Sumo Association of his withdrawal from the July Grand Sumo Tournament on Monday, a day after the relocated basho began in Tokyo.
The medical report submitted to the JSA stated that Kakuryu, 34, will "require medical treatment for the next two weeks" for right elbow ligament damage and other injuries.
According to his stablemaster Michinoku, former ozeki Kirishima, he injured his right elbow during training before the tournament.
The yokozuna lost to No. 1 maegashira Endo on Day 1, exasperating the injury when he landed on the mound.
"An elbow injury makes you afraid of getting hit. It's better to heal properly," Michinoku said.
It is Kakuryu's first withdrawal through injury since the New Year tournament and his 16th withdrawal overall.
