Yokozuna Kakuryu maintained his sole lead while fellow yokozuna Hakuho stayed hot on his trail one win back in Day 10 action at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on Tuesday.
In the day's most anticipated bout, Kakuryu turned back thrusts from No. 4 maegashira Ichinojo while firmly grasping his belt, eventually forcing him out to stay unbeaten. On the previous day, the hefty maegashira overpowered Hakuho to hand him his first loss of the tournament.
Hakuho avoided a second straight loss on Day 10 by easily finishing off sekiwake Tamawashi (1-9).
Ozeki Takayasu, who suffered an elbow injury on Sunday, managed to earn a kachikoshi eighth win by forcing out No. 4 maegashira Meisei (2-8) in their first career matchup. Takayasu is the only ozeki competing in the Nagoya tourney after the three others -- Takakeisho, Tochinoshin and Goeido -- withdrew from the basho.
Besides Takayasu, Tomokaze and Myogiryu, both No. 7 maegashira, as well as No. 16 maegashira Terutsuyoshi also collected their eighth win.
In other action, No. 1 maegashira Hokutofuji picked up his seventh victory by pushing out komusubi Ryuden (3-7). Asanoyama, another top-ranked maegashira who won the previous Summer tournament in May, suffered his sixth loss when komusubi Abi pulled him down. The komusubi evened his record at 5-5.
