Yogurt shop, phone store robbed in Elmhurst

Oct. 29--Elmhurst police are investigating two armed robberies that took place Tuesday including one in which store clerks and customers were ordered to a back office while a safe was opened and money taken.

The first robbery occurred at Yogen Fruz, 275 N. York Road, police said. About 5:30 p.m. a man entered the business, displayed a handgun to the cashier and demanded money. The man made off with an undisclosed amount of money. He is described as male, approximately 25 years old, weighing about 200 pounds and 5-foot-10-inches tall. He was wearing a dark sweater, jeans and a stocking cap. Police tried to track the thief with a K-9 unit east to Michigan Street, but did not catch him.

The second robbery occurred at 8 p.m. at the Verizon store, 560 W. St. Charles Road, according to police. Two men entered the store, each displaying a handgun. The suspects moved two clerks and three customers to a back office. They began taking cell phones and demanding that the safe be opened. When the safe was opened they took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled on foot while the clerks and customers remained in the back office.

One of the robbers is described as a male, in his mid-20s, about six feet tall and with a thin build.

The other is described as male, in his mid-20s, about five-feet-eight-inches tall and with a stocky build.

No one was injured in either robbery.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police at 630-530-3050.
