Raiders tie chain to cash machine and try to rip it from wall using getaway car

Yobs tried to rip a cash machine from the wall by connecting a chain from a car to the ATM in Norris Green last night.

The attempted smash-and-grab happened at 10pm on Saturday in Broad Lane.

But the criminals didn't realise a police patrol was at the bottom of the road and came across the attempted robbery, prompting the louts to flee.

Those responsible sped away in a car which was later recovered close to St Christopher's Church in Lorenzo Drive.

No money was stolen although the hole-in-the-wall cash machine was damaged.

Police say there was more than one offender and enquiries are ongoing to catch those involved.

After the incident, officers cordoned off part of the road and were seen looking in the road for evidence.

Earlier this week, Chief Constable Andy Cooke warned people his colleagues were ready to take action for those Covid-19 restrictions during the second national lockdown and those still prepared to go out commit crime.

He said: "To the many who have been complying with restrictions - a heartfelt thank you.

"To the few who feel restrictions don’t apply to them, be prepared to face enforcement.”
