Although they checked all of the entrances to the park they found no signs of fire.
However a picture shared on social media showed one of the gang deliberately setting fire to the memorial to those who gave their lives in active service.
An unconfirmed report said "the police chased and caught at least one of the group."
Among those reacting to the post was one who said: "That is terrible. What pleasure do they get doing this, so disrespectful."
Another said: "They're that ignorant they'll neither know nor care what the soldier symbolises."
While another said: "I'm the first to stick up for young people and their lack of places to go and things to do but this is disgusting.
"It costs nothing to teach your child respect!"
Merseyside Police was approached for comment.
