Yobs hurling objects from bridge cause head-on crash

Yobs hurling objects from a high bridge led to two cars crashing into each other on the road below.

Police were called to the scene in Vyner Road North, Bidston, near Birkenhead, shortly before 9pm yesterday (Tuesday, August 17).

It was reported two cars had a head-on collision after objects were thrown at a vehicle from the bridge near Windmill Farm.

Patrols attended and found three youths in the area.

Two made off from the scene on foot and a 15-year-old was stop searched but police said there was not enough evidence to link him to the incident.

A social media post said a car coming from the Upton direction swerved onto the other side and hit the car coming from the Birkenhead direction.

No injuries were reported but the drivers were left extremely shaken and one vehicle was recovered.

Enquiries are being carried out and patrols have been stepped up in the area to try to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.

It is believed the bridge has been used before to drop objects on to the road below.

Sergeant Kieran Cannell of Merseyside Police said: "This kind of reckless behaviour can have very serious consequences and it is extremely fortunate nobody was hurt on this occasion.

"We know the nuisance and disruption caused by wanton acts of criminal damage such as this and therefore I would urge all parents and guardians of young people across Merseyside to know where they are, who they are with and what they are doing.

"This type of criminality can have a serious impact on drivers and passengers alike and we will simply not tolerate such behaviour. If you know anything about who is putting our communities at risk in this way, please contact us so that we can take proactive action."

Officers are appealing for anyone with any information on this incident or any anti-social behaviour in their area to contact police by direct messaging @MerPolCC, Merseyside Police Contact Centre on Facebook, or calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
