It’s understood he refused to wear a mask and was moved to a side room after causing a disturbance.

He then spat at two female nurses, aged 49 and 23, after refusing to answer questions about coronavirus symptoms.

The man also pushed one of the nurses during the shocking outburst.

The coronavirus has claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people in Scotland to date, with dedicated frontline NHS staff working around the clock to treat patients struck down by the  virus.

It is transmitted through saliva and other bodily fluids and is considered highly contagious.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We can confirm officers attended the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley on Monday evening to reports of male causing a disturbance within the Accident and Emergency department.

“Assaults on frontline staff will simply not be tolerated.

“NHS staff working long hours under challenging circumstances deserve to be treated with respect and not fear being targeted in their place of work.”

A spokeswoman said a 33-year-old man had been arrested and charged with assault.
