Yob smashed hospital monitor and bit cop after being arrested for carrying a knife

A mother of one who smashed a hospital monitor and bit a police custody officer was warned today that she faced jail.

Katlynn Brown, 24, was taken to the Forth Valley Royal Hospital amid concerns for her health.

Falkirk Sheriff Court heard she had been earlier arrested in Carmuirs Drive, Camelon, for carrying a knife.

Police spotted her acting suspiciously and found the black handled kitchen knife with a three-and-a-half inch blade by a parked car where she had dropped it.

She told officers the blade was "for my protection".

At the hospital she alternately declined medical treatment and complained that she was waiting to be treated, before causing the medical monitor - used to check patients' blood pressure and oxygen levels - to crash to the floor.

Prosecutor Kristina Kelly said the machine's screen smashed, and it cost £600 to repair it.

Back at Falkirk Police Station, Brown bit custody officer Pauline Shearer on the left forearm.

Ms Kelly said the officer suffered a bite mark which broke the skin.

She had to have tests for infectious diseases.

In a victim impact statement, Ms Shearer said the incident had prevented her from being able to donate blood for a period of time.

Brown, of Camelon, pleaded guilty on indictment to assaulting the custody officer, having a knife without lawful excuse, and committing a statutory breach of the peace at the hospital.

The incidents happened on December 15, 2020.

Solicitor Murray Aitken, defending, said: "She is acutely aware that these are serious offences, but latterly she has made significant efforts to turn her life around."

Sheriff Christopher Shead deferred sentence until March 31st, and continued bail.

He warned, however: "Custody is the most likely disposal."
