Yob involved in bottle attack given chance to stay out of trouble

A yob who tried to bottle someone during a rammy on a Paisley street has been given a chance to stay out of jail.

Connor Moran, appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court today after previously pleading guilty to repeatedly trying to strike Lee Fleming with the weapon on Whitesbridge Avenue in the town on October 4, 2019.

The court heard the 20-year-old, of Dundonald Road in Gallowhill, has had a number of issues with drugs an alcohol and that he was attempting to get them under control.

His defence solicitor, Rhona Lynch said he had been released from a nine-month custodial sentence in July and has managed to keep out of trouble since then.

She told the court: “He had a difficult last year and I understand he has served a custodial sentence for another matter in between the date of this offence and it calling in court today.

“He was released from his sentence in July this year and he tells me he has been really making a conscious effort to stay away from negative influences.

“He is in contact with Renfrewshire Drug Services as he has had difficulty with alcohol in the past.

“He has ceased mostly all drug use apart from the occasional use of cannabis, but tells me he is no longer taking Valium or cocaine.”

Ms Lynch also said Moran, who was awaiting the outcome of another case in Glasgow, was keen to undertake unpaid work as he was interested in woodwork.

All offenders currently carrying out unpaid work are completing bird boxes at home due to coronavirus restrictions which remain in place.

Sheriff Tom McCartney told Moran that he would usually hand out a custodial sentence for offensive weapon charges, but as the offence took place in 2019 he was willing to give him a chance.

He said: “The two offences before me are having an offensive weapon and assaulting someone by attempting to strike them with a glass bottle.

“I can say that these offences would often only carry the option of a custodial sentence.

“However, I note that these offences are two years or age and that you have served a separate custodial sentence.”

Moran was placed on a Community Payback Order and placed under supervision for one year.

He will also have to complete 100 hours of unpaid work within that time.

He will return to court on January 20 for a review of the court order.
