Yet to get court orders on Sidhu diet chart: Patiala jail officials

PATIALA: The Central Jail Patiala authorities on Thursday said they had not yet got the diet chart plan issued by the board of doctors for Congress leader Navjot Sindhu.

The board of doctors, comprising two doctors and a dietician, have recommended a high-fiber low carbohydrate and low-fat diet for Sidhu. An oral lifelong anticoagulation (tablet RIVAROXABAN 20mg OD with night meal); compression stocking and physical activity and weight reduction was also recommended.

The board was constituted on the court orders, following a petition moved on behalf of Sidhu that he had health issues and needed a special diet. The court had sought the opinion of the medical board of Government Rajindra Hospital after examining Sidhu, who was sentenced to one-year jail by the Supreme Court on May 19 in the 1988 road rage death case. “We are yet to get the court orders and will get a diet plan prescribed through our jail medical officer after which Sidhu will be given a diet accordingly,” said jail superintendent M S Tiwana.

Government Rajindra Hospital medical superintendent Dr HS Rekhi said, “We have followed the court instructions and conducted Sidhu’s medical examination and recommended the diet chart accordingly.”

Sidhu suffers from medical conditions like embolism and has a liver ailment. In 2015, he underwent treatment for acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT) at a hospital in Delhi. DVT is caused by a blood clot in a deep vein which hinders the normal blood flow.

Special diet plan

Sidhu's s special diet includes a cup of rosemary tea and half a glass of white petha (ash gourd) juice or one glass of coconut water in early morning; one cup of lactose-free milk, one tablespoon of flax/sunflower/melon/chia seeds, five-six almonds, one walnut and two pecan nuts in breakfast.

In the mid-morning meal, the doctors have recommended a glass of juice (beetroot/cucumber/tulsi leaves/amla/carrot/fresh haldi/aloe vera) or any of fruits like watermelon, melon, kiwi, guava etc, or sprouted black chana, green gram with cucumber/tomato/half lemon/avocado.

For lunch, the doctors have suggested one bowl of cucumber, seasonal green vegetables with one chapati of sorghum, singhara or ragi flour. Another option is -- one katori of beetroot raita, one bowl green salad comprising cucumber, tomato, kakri, lettuce leaves and half lemon. One glass of Lassi is advised.

In the evening, he can take a cup of tea with milk and 25g paneer or tofu with half lemon. For dinner, he has been recommended mixed vegetables and dal soup or black chana soup and one bowl of sauteed green vegetables. At bedtime, one cup of chamomile tea and one tablespoon of psyllium husk with half glass of warm water is recommended.
