The car park was reportedly close to full by lunchtime on Thursday after shoppers headed to the city centre.

Dean Street Multi-storey, Eldon Square Multi-storey and Manors Multi-storey were also reportedly close to full in the afternoon.

Drivers have been facing lengthy delays in the city centre as people head to the shops and visit the Christmas Market.

It comes after motorists claimed they waited more than three hours to leave the NCP John Dobson Street Car Park on Saturday night.

As queues tailed back to the 12th floor, motorists said it was taking more than one hour to go down a single level.

Newcastle City Council has said it will no monitor traffic signals on Durant Road, between the Central Motorway and John Dobson Street, in a bid to improve traffic flow.

The local authority said that the city's festive programme, which includes an ice-rink at the Life Science Centre, the Grainger Market, Fenwick window and larger Christmas Market had seen an increase in visitors.

People are being encouraged to use public transport, to use lesser known city centre car parks or to park at the edge of the city and walk in.
