Yes, that is a real rabbit

TATSUNO, Hyogo -- A member of the world's biggest rabbit species has joined the ranks at the Tatsuno Koen park zoo in Tatsuno, Hyogo Prefecture.

The rabbit is a male Flemish giant born last April. It makes quite an impression at 5.6 kilograms, or twice the weight of the other nine rabbits at the zoo.

The rabbit came to the zoo in November from a farm in Tamba in the prefecture, as it was felt to be an unusual, approachable animal that would draw in even more people.

Name suggestions were collected from among the children in Tatsuno, and the rabbit was ultimately dubbed Pyonkichi. In Japanese, "pyon" is an onomatopoeic word for hopping.

"He doesn't hop a lot, maybe because he's so big," a city official in charge said. "But we hope everyone will watch him grow."

The city-run zoo is open year-round free of charge.
