Yes, Met Office is forecasting snow - if you live on Ben Nevis

Weather experts are predicting the UK will see its first proper snow fall of the winter in 10 days - on October 24 - but the Met Office has other ideas.

Forecasters at the UK's official weather service say in fact temperatures could be above average for the time of year as we head into the end of October and the start of November.

Some have claimed there will be wintry conditions across the north of the UK within days.

But while the Met Office says there is a 60% chance of snowfall on Ben Nevis this week - as there usually is this time of year - the rest of the country could be warmer than average.

But they also say it will be wet and windy in places.

The official forecast from October 18 to October 27 reads: "Although starting mostly dry in the southeast, a period of unsettled weather will then develop through next week, with wet and windy conditions likely for all areas, especially so in the north and west.

"There will be showers and longer spells of rain, with the greatest chance of gales in the north and northwest. There will still be some sunshine between the showers, and the best of any drier interludes will be in the southeast.

"Temperatures for all will be around average, if not slightly above. Towards the end of next week and beyond, there may be longer drier spells between the periods of wind and rain, these most likely in the south and east of the country."

The average temperature in the UK at this time of year is between 7C and 14C.

Looking further ahead, to November 11, the forecast reads: "Changeable conditions are likely to continue during late October. There are indications that drier interludes may become more prolonged across the south and southeast whilst wetter and windier conditions continue in the north and northwest.

"Temperatures are set to be around average for the rest of October. Confidence becomes very low into the start of November where widely settled periods could develop periodically with an increased risk of frost and fog, although unsettled periods are still possible.

"Temperatures in November are likely to remain a little above average overall but with an increased likelihood of some colder spells."
