Yemeni President Heads to Riyadh to Meet with UN Envoy

Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi traveled Sunday from the US, where he underwent medical examinations in the state of Ohio, to the Saudi capital Riyadh, informed Yemeni sources said.

“President Hadi is expected to meet in the Saudi capital with UN envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths to set a date for the planned Yemeni talks, expected in Sweden next month, and to be briefed on negotiations conducted between the UN envoy and Houthis during Griffiths’ visit to Sanaa last week,” the sources told Asharq Al-Awsat.

Peace negotiations expected in Sweden early December aim to find a political solution to Yemen’s crisis.

Sources said the Hadi-Griffiths meeting, scheduled for Monday or Tuesday, is expected to focus on trust-building between the warring parties, mainly the issue of detainees.

Meanwhile, Minister of State and Advisor to the Yemeni President Dr. Mohammed Al-Ameri accused Griffiths of “inapprehensible behavior” in showing extreme leniency towards the Iran-backed Houthi militias.

Any such move “would neither serve the Yemeni people, nor the safety of international sea corridors and navigation,” Ameri told Asharq Al-Awsat.

Asked about the legitimate government’s latest preparations for the Sweden peace talks, he said: “We haven’t yet appointed a government delegation to attend the talks. President Hadi would do so in the near future.”

Separately, Vice President Ali Mohsen Saleh discussed with the president's advisers the latest political and military developments, mainly the victories achieved by the national army against the Houthi coup.

Saleh reviewed the military situation and efforts to build the military institution, appreciating the support of Arab Coalition countries led by Saudi Arabia with backing from the United Arab Emirates.
